Yoong Kie Seafood Restaurant- Genting Highland

Be careful n check prices especially when ordering fish dishes……….This is not the first time we hear of this type of complaint and it won’t be the last as we are all trusting people who don’t normally ask about food prices before we order…………some say ‘pai seh’ to ask price and “if you need to ask the price means you can’t afford to eat the dish” .” if no money don’t order expensive food”……..I still think it is best to ask for the price if not sure to avoid such expensive bill……I got this an email from my friend for their great experience with Yoong Kie. :P

Dear All…………

Last week, I brought my guests to Genting Highlands. After a day ‘above the clouds’, we decided to have dinner at the Gohtong Jaya area on the way down. We ordered some dishes and decided to have a steamed fish as well. So the captain recommended ’sultan fish’.
The steamed fish came. HALF, and plain steamed. Good & fine.

But when the bill came, it came to over $500 !! We were shocked !! We were told the fish was 1.4kg ( & please bear in mind, its ONLY HALF A FISH ) at RM 320 per kg! RM 420!! This was daylight robbery. We were not informed by the Captain that a kg of the Sultan fish would cost us RM 320 and there was also no signs of such pricings anywhere in the restaurant.

When we checked with the cashier, she told us, its correct. Of cos, it was our mistake for not asking the price first. Anyway, on the way back to KL, we stopped at Unique Seafood,PJ, where one can choose a live fish. The most expensive Soon Hock swimming in the tank is RM135 per kilo. Asked them about the Sultan fish, it is going for RM100 a kilo

Will be sending this letter to the newspapers, Tourism board, etc etc; and friends, pls pass on to all on yr email list.

Quan Nem with its 3 famous Vietnamese dishes

Having the habit of going to the same shop for dining, today I dine Quan Nem again. I am coming here every Friday if I am not in the airport to rush back to KL for the weekend. As the title tells, this place only serves 3 selection of dishes. The simple menu really caught me in surprise the first time I came here. Look at the menu below, it looks incredibly simple.

This is what I like about this restaurant. With a very limited of selections, I don’t need to scratch my head about what to choose. This is especially good when I am rushing to go shopping or after along day work. x

The main dish is vermicelli which the Vietnamese called it as “Bun”. One could choose to have the “bun” with the yummy Hue-style crab spring rolls, fresh water crab or the famous Vietnam style grilled pork. And for today I have ordered the crab spring roll to go with my vermicelli.

The Vietnamese way to eat this dish is to put some “bun” in a bowl and add in some herb leaves and one or two spoonful of fish sauce or “nuoc mam” which is an essential in the Vietnamese cooking. I like to use dried basil in my cooking, but to eat it fresh I guess it will need to take me awhile to adapt. Without the herbs in my bowl, the meal is still delicious. I like it very much, especially when I can feel the chunky crab meats bite in the spring roll.

Price:

This restaurant serve cheap meal which costs around USD3 to USD5.

Location:

15E Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City (I was told that they have a branch in Hanoi too)
